Elon Musk to Launch Rival to ChatGPT

Elon Musk, the CEO of Tesla and SpaceX, announced on Monday his plans to launch an artificial intelligence (AI) platform called "TruthGPT". During an interview with Fox News, he explained that this AI will "understand the nature of the universe" and "maximise truth-seeking". Musk has previously expressed concerns about the potential dangers of AI and criticised OpenAI – the firm behind chatbot sensation ChatGPT – of "training the AI to lie".

He also accused Google co-founder Larry Page of not taking AI safety seriously. He has reportedly been poaching AI researchers from Google to launch a start-up to rival OpenAI. Last month, he registered a firm called X.AI Corp, with himself listed as the sole director and Jared Birchall, the managing director of Musk's family office, as secretary.

Despite his criticisms, Elon Musk co-founded OpenAI in 2015, but stepped down from the board in 2018. He later tweeted that he disagreed with some of the company's objectives and had to concentrate on other business interests. Nonetheless, he has continued to warn about the potential dangers of AI and the need for regulation.

During the interview with Fox News, He reiterated that AI has the potential to be more dangerous than nuclear weapons, with the potential for "civilizational destruction". He also warned that super-intelligent AI could write incredibly well and manipulate public opinion.

He announcement comes after he and a group of AI experts called for a six-month pause in developing systems more powerful than OpenAI's newly launched GPT-4, citing potential risks to society. Microsoft, a major competitor to OpenAI, recently announced a multi-billion dollar investment in the firm, intensifying the race to attract AI funding in Silicon Valley.

He tweeted over the weekend that he had previously urged former US President Barack Obama to encourage AI regulation.
