A non-discriminatory and egalitarian legal framework is essential for sustainable development in the country- Minister of Law

Law, Justice, and Parliamentary Affairs Minister Anisul Haque said a non-discriminatory and egalitarian legal framework is essential for the sustainable development of any country.
To this end, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s government has taken various steps to enact anti-discrimination legislation in line with other goals of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), non-discrimination law and policy implementation.
He was speaking as the chief guest at a workshop on legislative research organized by the Legislative and Parliamentary Affairs Department of the Law Ministry at a five-star hotel in the capital on Sunday (June 20th).
Anisul Haque said the Legislative and Parliamentary Affairs Division of the Law Ministry is playing a key role in implementing Goal-16 (b) of the SDGs.
As part of this, a reform project has been undertaken by identifying different laws and policies through legal research. Under this project, 126 laws enacted from 1899 to 2020 contain any discriminatory provisions.
The research faculty/department was assigned to the University, Chittagong University, Rajshahi University, and BRAC University. Universities today have presented their research findings.
Through research, they have made several recommendations in the form of discriminatory provisions of different laws, different forms of discrimination, such as gender-based discrimination, discrimination through the use of language, discrimination through the application, etc.
Referring to the Center for Policy Dialogue (CPD), the minister said, “We sometimes find it sad that without researching and studying the law, we talk about the law, explaining the disregard for the law. Law is an important subject that cannot be explained without proper study and research. People will be confused.
